Everything you need to know to help your child get the most out of SpeakEasy

Getting Started

SpeakEasy is designed to make speech practice fun and engaging for children. Here's how to help your child get started:

  1. Choose a category: Start with something your child is interested in (animals, food, etc.)
  2. Listen first: Tap the "Listen" button to hear the word pronounced clearly
  3. Practice together: Say the word together with your child
  4. Celebrate: Tap "I Said It!" when your child successfully says the word
  5. Track progress: Check the Progress page to see stars earned

Best Practices

Keep Sessions Short

5-10 minutes of focused practice is ideal for young children. Short, frequent sessions are more effective than long, infrequent ones.

Make It Fun

Celebrate every attempt, not just perfect pronunciation. Use the stars and progress tracking to motivate your child.

Model Clear Speech

Say words clearly and let your child watch your mouth. Exaggerate sounds slightly to help them see how words are formed.

Be Patient

Every child develops at their own pace. Avoid correcting too much—focus on encouragement and positive reinforcement.

Age Guidelines

Ages 2-3 years

Focus on simple, familiar words like "mama," "dada," "milk," "ball." Use the food and animal categories.

Tip: Sit with your child and practice together. Make it a bonding activity.

Ages 4-5 years

Introduce all categories. Children this age can use the app more independently with supervision.

Tip: Let them choose which category to practice. Give them ownership of their learning.

Ages 6+ years

Can use the app independently. Focus on words they struggle with in school or social settings.

Tip: Review progress together weekly. Set goals and celebrate achievements.

When to Seek Professional Help

While SpeakEasy is a great tool for practice, it's not a replacement for professional speech therapy. Consider consulting a speech-language pathologist if your child:

  • Is not speaking in sentences by age 3
  • Has speech that is difficult to understand by age 4
  • Struggles with specific sounds (like "r," "s," "th") past age 5-6
  • Stutters or has significant disfluencies
  • Shows frustration or avoidance when speaking
  • Has a known hearing issue or developmental delay

Your pediatrician can provide a referral to a qualified speech-language pathologist in your area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my child practice?

Daily practice of 5-10 minutes is ideal. Consistency is more important than duration. Even 3-4 times per week can show good progress.

Can my child use the app alone?

Children under 5 should use the app with a parent. Older children (6+) can use it independently, but we recommend checking in regularly to review progress and provide encouragement.

What if my child gets frustrated?

Take a break and try again later. Focus on words they can say successfully to build confidence. Remember, every child develops at their own pace.

How does the progress tracking work?

Progress is saved locally on your device. When your child taps "I Said It!" for a word, it's marked as practiced. Stars are earned for each word, and you can see overall progress on the Progress page.

Is this app a replacement for speech therapy?

No. SpeakEasy is a supplementary practice tool. If your child has significant speech difficulties, please consult a licensed speech-language pathologist for professional evaluation and treatment.
